Either Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is being insincere, or he cannot understand how ironic that statement is, and how bad he is with cognitive dissonance. Either way you look at it, thank god Orrin Hatch's political career is almost over.
Remember Judge Garland? A judge who hasn't lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
As Quartz has documented, Orrin Hatch has a history of defending men who have been accused of sexual assault.
He defended Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas when Anita Hill testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Hatch claimed that Hill "was coached by special interests."
Irony: Brett Kavanaugh has prepared for testimonies with Bill Shine, who is the White House communications director. While as an executive for Fox News, Shine allegedly tried to keep sexual harassment hidden at the network that has given Kavanaugh a platform to be the victim. That's where Kavanaugh went to get to defend his name against sexual harassment allegations, because Fox News respects women.
Orrin Hatch defended Trump after bragging about grabbing women by their pussy:
That’s all years before […] Look, I happen to be a Mormon by religion. Our religion believes people can repent, they can change their lives, which apparently he’s changed his life. I don’t even know if that was true or if it was just locker room talk as he said it was. But that was 11 years before, and I’m not going to judge him by mistakes he made a decade before or more. And I’m sure he realizes that was a mistake.
So I judge him by what he is today, and all I can say is he’s a very strong personality with a lot of intellectual fortitude.
There was Rob Porter who Hatch made sure to defend, though it would prove to be vain. Smearing Porter's second wife, Hatch said:
It’s incredibly discouraging to see such a vile attack on such a decent man. Shame on any publication that would print this—and shame on the politically motivated, morally bankrupt character assassins that would attempt to sully a man’s good name.
I know Rob. I’ve known him for years, both as a close friend and as a personal adviser. He is kind and considerate towards all. The country needs more honest, principled people like Rob Porter, which is why I hope that this cynical campaign to discredit his character ultimately fails.
Hatch was unsure of Roy Moore at first, but changed his tune when Trump came out in support of Moore. Saying that what Moore did happened a long time ago, and defended Trump's claim that Roy Moore was the only Republican they had in that area of Alabama.
To be fair to Orrin Hatch, he has attacked a man for being accused of sexual harassment.
When allegations against Al Franken came out, Orrin Hatch said:
Serving in the Senate is a privilege […] and here we hold our members to the highest ethical standards, and I expect any of my colleagues to adhere to those standards.
According to Hatch, it's more of a privilege to be on the Senate than on the Supreme Court.
What a guy to have on your side Brett Kavanaugh.
