Environmental Update, August 30, 2018:

Updated: Aug 30, 2018

1. Kansas is the kind of state that say’s environmental protection is better handled by the state government, and not by the federal government. While looking into the possible expansion of a business, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment found dry cleaning chemicals had been contaminating groundwater. The KDHE acted as fast as they could! After all, they’re a local EPA, so they’re going to be better than what the federal government could do. They acted six years later fast! Furthermore, the KDHE didn’t even “test private wells less than a mile away” from the main contamination site. People living within the contaminated groundwater area “didn’t find out for 7 years.”

Kansas represents our culture: Profit over people, and no care for the environment…

2. “Whole Foods” is not what we think it is. “Manure and fertilizer runoff coming from the American heartland,” is why there’s a dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico. This dead zone is created because of companies like McDonald’s, Tyson Foods, amongst others. They, like us, are not considering the environment costs of our actions. Instead of what’s better for the environment, they choose profits. Instead of what’s better for the environment, Americans eat way more meat than they need to. I eat more meat than I should!

I am like our culture: Comfort over sustainability...

3. People are honestly ignorant about just how much plastic there is in the ocean. The ocean’s are not the only place that has made plastic its home. The Great Lakes of North America get to be fortunate enough to have plastic and pollution in them too. Eight million and more tons of plastic enter the oceans every year, but an estimated “10,000 tons of plastic enter the Great Lakes annually.”

If you have consumed contaminated beer? I’m sorry, because I love drinking beer!..

4. Wildfires and heatwaves look to be the normal in California, says a report. By 2100, California “could see a 77% increase in the average area burned by wildfires.” California could see 67 percent of its coastline erode. California’s state governor Jerry Brown said “These findings are profoundly serious and will continue to guide us as we confront the apocalyptic threat of irreversible climate change.” The future of California faces flooding, and droughts. California is taking minor steps, but Trump can’t even stand that. If California sets a standard, they set a standard for the rest of the country. A standard of buying more vehicles, destroying more of the environment, and accelerating climate change.

Trump is American culture: Profit over people…

5. What is going on in Louisiana is a perfect example of profit over people. The Bayou Bridge pipeline is being built, but locals do not want it to be built. Unfortunately, in this culture, we are servants to profit than the environment. Those who protest the destruction of the environment will be arrested. Those whom destroy the environment get to be protected by the state. That's why private contractors are paid by the corporations, and the contractors hire local police. It's why some can pollute, but those against the pollution are punished. Our culture is one of violence, rather than of one of cooperation. It’s why in Louisiana, oil pipelines will go through communities that did not want it, and did not sign off on it. It’s why the oil pipeline companies can hire private contractors to hire local police, because the rich and powerful are who the police serve. From Louisiana to North Dakota, the police and private contractors work for one reason.

In this culture: Police and private contractors serve for profit over people...
