Stop Diverting Rivers Into the Sea!

As California goes up in flames, Trump thought it was best to send out tweets shitting on the state of California:

California wildfires are being magnified and made so much worse by the bad environmental laws which aren’t allowing massive amount of readily available water to be properly utilized. It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Must also tree clear to stop fire spreading.

His first insanely stupid tweet, was followed by a second insanely stupid tweet:

Governor Jerry Brown must allow the Free Flow of the vast amounts of water coming from the North and foolishly being diverted into the Pacific Ocean. Can be used for fires, farming and everything else. Think of California with plenty of Water-NIce! Fast Federal govt. approvals.

As ThinkProgress points out, two years ago Donald Trump told the people of California that they weren’t going through a drought. “We’re going to solve your water problem, you have a water problem that is so insane,” said Trump in California two years ago. “It is so ridiculous where they’re taking the water and shoving it out to sea.” It’s insane to think that anyone could believe someone is “shoving” water out to sea.

It’s safe to say that Trump’s tweets were met with mocking retorts from the scientific community. Not even the science community. Cal Fire said they didn’t know what the fuck was going on, and a Governor Jerry Brown spokesman said “This doesn’t merit a response.” Good by Jerry Brown and team, point out the stupidity of his tweets without actually saying anything. Be the better man, because lord knows Trump can’t. People have died, people have lost important things because of these fires, and still Donald Trump can’t help but making this about him. After all, I’m talking about him more so than the fires and its connections to climate change, and so on, but I’m stupid too. Just not as dumb as Trump.

Peter Gleick, a California climate and water expert, tweeted that Trump’s explanation to the fires was “gobbledygook bullshit” and “unmitigated crap.”

What makes his stance both “gobbledygook bullshit” and “unmitigated crap,” is that he tweets about these fires, while his administration is planning to cut fire science funding. To be fair, we know the answer to stop forest fires, stop shoving river water into the sea. Scientists trying to seek newer methods of fighting forest fighters that have been federally funded, could see their money cut in the 2019 federal budget.

As Truthout points out:

Like all wildfires, the Ute Park Fire was dangerous and expensive. But no one died and crews saved every home – thanks in part to a century of hard-won firefighting knowhow.

Science played a vital role in this success story by helping develop the best ways to battle wildfires. But the Trump administration wants to slash federal funding for wildfire science, at a time when forest and brush fires are getting bigger, happening year-round and becoming increasingly erratic.

Aside from developing methods to “predict, prepare and respond-critical for safeguarding people and property,” scientists also “explore how fuels, flames, terrain, smoke and weather interact.”

All of that doesn’t matter, because if we just stop letting the rivers from going to sea…
