Trump Attacks NATO On An Interesting & Dangerous Day

It's not a normal day in America if Donald Trump isn't on Twitter attacking our allies, but on Sunday, he did just that.

"The large and violent French protests don’t take into account how badly the United States has been treated on Trade by the European Union or on fair and reasonable payments for our GREAT military protection. Both of these topics must be remedied soon," tweeted Trump around 5-o'clock in the morning.

Around noon, he tweeted: "Europe has to pay their fair share for Military Protection. The European Union, for many years, has taken advantage of us on Trade, and then they don’t live up to their Military commitment through NATO. Things must change fast!"

The irony of Trump's tweets is that they came on the very day that Ukraine accused Russia of stealing three navy vessels in the Black Sea. It was the idea of countering Russian aggression that NATO was formed.

Certainly people can argue whether that was warranted, propaganda, but that was the reason for NATO, at least rhetorically.

President for the Council on Foreign Relations, Richard N. Haass, responded with his own tweet: "Timing may not be everything, but it can be a lot. While this statement by Potus would be unwelcome any day, it is especially unfortunate today given new Russian military action against Ukraine as it signals Putin he has little to worry about from a divided distracted West."

Not only that, but as Noam Chomsky has pointed out in a recent interview, Trump getting the United States out of the INF treaty increases the already great danger of nuclear war.

Trump bitches that Europe isn't paying "their fair share," but with what is happening in Ukraine, why the fuck would they believe that?
